Union County SWAT assisted on the scene of an incident where a man held police at bay and refused to come out of an apartment in a section of Rahway on Monday evening.
Police have not yet released official information into the circumstances into what prompted the incident to transpire, but according to preliminary information, at approximately 8:30 p.m., police sent a reversed 911 alert to residents to avoid the area of East Grand Avenue and Montgomery Street due to police activity.
At the scene, heavy police presence focused on The Grand Meridia luxury apartment building located at 255 East Grand Avenue.
Police say a male, who was believed to be armed with a weapon, refused to come out of an apartment at that location.
Residents in the area said that during the standoff, they heard a loud popping noise or possible gunfire, but police have not confirmed if the suspect or officers on the scene fired a weapon.
Police say just before 9:50 p.m., the suspect surrendered to officers without further incident.
The suspect was transported to a hospital in Elizabeth for psychiatric evaluation, according to reports.
The investigation remains active.
