Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that a retired New York City Police detective discharged a weapon last night after two robbery suspects accosted her.
Police said at approximately 9:33 p.m., the 43-year old female NYPD detective was getting into her vehicle at Commerce Street and McCarter Highway when she was approached by two males who demanded her money using a handgun.
During the robbery attempt the former detective, who retired nine months ago, discharged her weapon.
The suspects fled after being shot and were apprehended by responding Newark police officers as they were running from the scene police said.
The detective recovered a replica gun used by the suspects.
The suspects, Tahje M. Hunt, 22, and Brian P. Moore, 27, both of Newark, were apprehended by police and arrested. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to University Hospital.
Hunt and Moore were each charged with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon (Imitation Firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose and Conspiracy.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation is continuing.
