UPDATE: Authorities Identify Newark's West Ward Fatal Shooting Victims

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a double homicide that Sunday evening  in Newark, NJ.  

The incident occurred in the 900 block of 18th Avenues shortly before 9:00 p.m. Newark police officers responded to this area on a report of a shooting in progress. Arriving officers discovered two males unresponsive outside at this location.

The victims were subsequently pronounced dead at the scene at 9:14 p.m. The victims have been identified as Jean Coutac, age 29, of Union and Luther Thompson, Jr., age 18, of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homcide Unit. 

The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
