UPDATE: Authorities Identify Irvington Man Killed in Elizabeth Shooting

Elizabeth

There is an active investigation into an early morning Elizabeth shooting that killed an Irvington Man.

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Daniel Louis of Irvington who was shot dead in a parking lot in the city.

According to police, an Elizabeth Police Department patrol unit was in the area of the 1100 block of Elizabeth Avenue at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning, when the two officers heard gunshots coming from a parking lot in the area of 1120 Elizabeth Avenue.

Upon arrival at the location, officers engaged a group of individuals that they determined to be involved in the shooting.

Police say at least one of those individuals fired at the officers, who returned fire. Neither of the officers suffered gunshot injuries and it is unclear if any of the individuals were hit by the officers return fire.

Police say the suspects then fled, in a vehicle, into Newark where they were able to escape.

According to authorities at the scene, additional officers located Mr. Louis, whom witnesses described as the victim of the initial shooting, unconscious and suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound where medics subsequently pronounced him dead at the scene.

Witnesses say the incident stem from a fist fight, but police say they are actively investigating what exactly prompted the shooting of Mr. Louis.

This matter remains under active joint investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, Elizabeth Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit.
