The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against a man who allegedly attempted to rob a barbershop in Newark which ended with an off-duty cop firing his gun striking the suspect.
Police say the man was armed with a gun during the attempted robbery that occurred at around 9 p.m. Tuesday while the officer was getting his hair cut.
Authorities identified the man as Phillip Hedgespeth, 42, of Newark and charged him with robbery and possession of a weapon.
According to authorities, the officer fired his service weapon, hitting the suspect, who then fled but was apprehended and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The investigation remains active .
