Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that Asya Dawkins, 37, of East Orange has been charged with reckless manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal stabbing of her son, Marcel Scott, 21, also of East Orange.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the mother and son got into an argument that resulted in a physical altercation that led to the fatal stabbing early this morning.
The son was pronounced dead at 12:56 am.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
The charges are accusations.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
