The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed an arrest in a violent shooting encounter that left a Newark woman dead, another person shot, and a third individual hit by a car while trying to escape the gunfire in the West Ward.Mr. Ramzee Mitchell, 18, was apprehended on Tuesday by the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force. He is being held on Murder and Robbery among other charges.
County officials said the charges against him include accusations related to the incident on Tuesday, April 16, when Ms. Natasha Ellis, 34, from Newark, was fatally shot.
The tragic event occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. and was initially detected by a ShotSpotter device that picked up gunfire near South Orange Avenue and Alexander Street.
RLS Media learned that Newark Police arrived at the scene to find shell casings and two gunshot victims, including Ellis, who was unresponsive.She was later pronounced dead by medical personnel county officials said.
The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at this time.
The charges against Mitchell are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
