Authorities announce the arrest of Mr. Quamarl L. Boykins, 19, Mr. Amir Bey, 23, Mr. Samid Strothers, 20, and Mr. Terry A. Lewis, 22, all of Newark, following an incident that began with a dispute at a bodega and ended with one suspect surrendering to the SWAT Team yesterday.
According to police, shortly before 9:30 a.m., police responded to Yeci Supermarket, located at Shepard and Osborne avenues, to a call of a man pointing a gun.
Responding officers saw three suspects - that fit the description given - flee from the group. One man, later identified as Quamarl L. Boykins, ran into a residence on the 100-block of Shepard Avenue armed with a gun.
Samid Strothers and Amir Bey also ran but were immediately apprehended.
Police charged Strothers with possession of 433 vials of cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute he is additionally accused of Contempt of Court.
Amir Bey, the man, identified as the person who pointed the gun in the bodega, was charged with Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.
Boykins remained inside the residence until 11:20 a.m., when a SWAT Team negotiator secured his surrender. He was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and located a loaded 9MM handgun along with five paintball guns, 51 vials of CDS cocaine and one glassine envelope of CDS heroin.
A fourth suspect, Terry A. Lewis, was arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and two counts of CDS Possession (heroin and cocaine) for the evidence seized during the search warrant.
These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
