Essex County authorities are investigating a shooting incident that left a man dead in East Orange Thursday afternoon.
A preliminary investigation indicated that just before 3 p.m., residents in the vicinity of Stueben and 9th Avenue dialed 911 after they heard repeated gunfire while retrieving their children from area schools.
Multiple officers arrived at the scene and found a man suffering bullet wounds inside a vehicle reports said.
The unidentified male was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
Residents in neighborhood told RLS Media, a person operating a scooter pulled up to the car and fired inside the car before riding away.
Residents said the neighborhood has seen a noticeable uptick in drug trafficking and loitering but police have not released a motive for the deadly encounter.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will lead the investigation and no arrests have been made at this time.
