In a distressing turn of events, an active shooter situation took place in northern Warren County, New Jersey, leading to two individuals being hospitalized.The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, reportedly stemmed from a domestic dispute on Columbia Street in Knowlton Township, situated directly across the Delaware River from Portland, Northampton County.
The motive for the attack has not been revealed by NJ State Police as of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities quickly responded, enforcing a shelter-in-place order to ensure the safety of the community as the situation escalated.
PA officials said the incident notably crossed state lines into Pennsylvania, prompting Portland's Mayor Heather Fischer to issue a similar order for the village of Columbia due to the emergent threat.
Mayor Fischer suggested that the tense atmosphere persisted until 8:47 p.m., when she ultimately announced that a suspect had been taken into custody, allowing for the shelter-in-place orders to be lifted.
The incident began near 3 Columbia Street in Knowlton, with police responding to alarming reports of an individual wielding a rifle and firing at people in the vicinity.
Details about the victims remain scarce, though one of the injured parties was reportedly in severe condition and required CPR at the scene.
The identity of this individual has not been confirmed, and another person is said to have sustained injuries during the incident as well.
