UPDATE: 63-Year-Old Woman Carjacked in Newark; Suspects Identified

A late night carjacking in Newark has two men in custody according to authorities.

Authorities said, Rajahn Fitzpatrick, 18, of Bloomfield and Tykeim N. Paxton 18, of Newark for a carjacking and a robbery, both of which occurred last night.

Police said at approximately 8:25 p.m., a 63-year old female victim parked her vehicle in the area of Reynolds Place and Woodbine Avenue when a suspect exited a dark colored SUV, approached and pointed a gun at her, demanding the keys to her vehicle.

A second suspect exited the SUV, entered the passenger side of the victim’s vehicle an ordered her out.

With police canvassing the city for the carjacked vehicle, a 29-year old male walking in the area of Chestnut Street and New Jersey Railroad Avenue was approached by the three suspects, who pulled up next to him in the carjacked vehicle authorities said.

The front and rear passengers exited the vehicle and robbed the victim at gunpoint.

Officers observed the carjacked vehicle driving in the area of Tichenor Street and McCarter Highway. When the driver became aware of police presence he began driving erratically, losing control and crashing into a traffic pole; subsequently hitting a vehicle stopped at a red signal at Irvine Turner Boulevard and Madison Street.

Occupants of the struck vehicle reported no injuries.

The three suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot heading in different directions.

Police apprehended the suspects, namely Fitzpatrick and Saxton.

Both were arrested and charged with Carjacking, Conspiracy, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Robbery.

The third suspect remains at large.

These charges are merely an accusation.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
