UPDATE: 47-Year-Old Man Shot Dead in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of a Newark man, whose body was found in Newark on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said Newark police officers located an unresponsive male in an apartment building in the 400 block of South 15th Street.

The male, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as Ronald L. Spearman, 47, according to Fennelly.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
