Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a shooting homicide that occurred Friday night in Newark, NJ.
Authorities said shortly after 10:30 p.m. Newark police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South 7th Street on reports of a person shot.
Arriving officers located a victim in the first floor hallway of an apartment building authorities said.
The male, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at11:46 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
The victim has been identified as Ronald Gwaltney, age 45, of Newark.
A second victim, also suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, was located near the original crime scene.
This victim, whose identity is not being released, was transported to a local hospital, where he is hospitalized in stable condition, according to Fennelly.
This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
