The Elizabeth Police Department is investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred in the city overnight.
According to a statement released by Elizabeth City Spokeswoman Kelly Martins, this incident happening on Spring Street (1&9) at East Grand Street shortly before 8:30 pm last night.
According to Spokeswoman Martins, the 40-year-old woman, who is an Elizabeth resident, was struck by the vehicle as she entered the intersection. The unidentified woman died a short time later.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation Spokeswoman Martins said.
Witnesses said the driver exited his vehicle and was emotionally distraught and had a panic attack after observing the motionless woman lying stretched out on the ground with one of her legs bent out of positions.
There are no charges at this time Spokesperson Martins said.
