Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the person fatally shot in East Orange by an off-duty Jersey City police officer has been identified as Samir Nicholson, 24, of East Orange.
Nicholson was shot on April 29 in the 200 block of South Clinton Street in East Orange at approximately 1 p.m.
Authorities said he was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the off-duty Jersey City police officer witnessed a shooting in progress.
Authorities said that officer shot Nicholson after he shot an unidentified male.
The other male was treated and released from University Hospital.
Police said they recovered a gun in Nicholson’s possession.
Consistent with Attorney General guidelines, the incident remains under review by the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
