UPDATE: 21-Year-Old Man Arrested in Bayonne Pedestrian Hit-and-Run

According to authorities, at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, the Bayonne Police Department received a report that the body of a man was on the side of Route 440 South between 21st and 22nd streets.

Upon arrival, responding Police Officers found the lifeless body of a male on the ground at that location.

Officiakd said was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:05 p.m.

The victim has not been positively identified and is pending formal identification by a family member.

The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Bayonne Police Department determined that the victim was a pedestrian on Route 440 South and had been struck by a 2004 Acura that left the scene.

The driver of the Acura has been identified as Abanoub Malek, 21, of Bayonne.

Police arrested Malek at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 8th then charged him with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-5.1, a second-degree crime.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Bayonne Police Department.
