Union County Prosecutor Willliam Daniel said at approximately 8:42 p.m., Wednesday, a Perth Amboy Police detective was injured during an officer-involved shooting in Rahway, Union County.The shooting occurred as Perth Amboy detectives were attempting to execute an arrest warrant for Angel Santiago, a 20-year-old Rahway resident.
Prosecutor Daniel said Santiago is a suspect in an aggravated assault incident that took place in Perth Amboy on July 23.
As police approached the area, there was an exchange of gunfire between the Perth Amboy detectives and Santiago.
This exchange resulted in a detective sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the leg and Santiago receiving a single gunshot wound to the lower leg.
The detective was transported to RWJ/Barnabas Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life-threatening injuries and is reported to be in stable condition.
Santiago was also taken to a local hospital for treatment and is currently in the custody of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office for the outstanding warrant from July 23.A handgun was recovered from the scene.
