UPDATE: 16-Year-Old Newark Teen Wanted for Double Shooting at Portuguese Festival Arrested

Newark

A 16-year-old boy from Newark, wanted for a double shooting that occurred at last month’s Portuguese Festival on June 10, 2017, was arrested, according to authorities.

Police patrolling the area of Ferry and Union streets were alerted by two victims that they had been shot by an unknown suspect sometime around 11:45 p.m.

Both victims were transported to University Hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Detectives developed sufficient evidence to identify a 16-year-old Newark male as a suspect in this double-shooting and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

The juvenile was arrested today without incident. Police charged the suspect with two counts of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (large capacity ammunition magazine).

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“I am grateful that this suspect, who put lives at risk during the Portuguese Festival, was arrested today through the excellent work of Newark Police detectives and the cooperative work of the FBI’s Newark Violent Crime Task Force,” Director Ambrose said.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we continue to search for additional suspects. The alliances we maintain with our law enforcement partners are vital to identifying and arresting those who commit violent crimes and to safeguard the lives of our residents and visitors.”
