A woman ( reportedly in her late 50's) was rushed to University Hospital in Newark after she was injured by gunfire overnight in Union, according to reports.
Residents on Amherst Avenue told RLS Metro that several rounds of gunfire rang out on Amherst Avenue near Union Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. sending police to the scene where the woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg/thigh area inside her residence at that location.
According to police, a report of a robbery on Stecher Place came in at approximately 11:10 p.m. A man sitting outside his house steps reported being approached by two men who robbed him at gunpoint of his cell phone and other possessions. Shortly after several shots were fired where at least one of the bullets appear to have penetrated the woman's residence, according to reports.
According to a family member, the woman was of Haitian decent, around the age of 58-years-old, and was very religious. "I don't know why anyone would want to injure her. She is very generous and doesn't bother anyone", the family member continued.
The woman was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Police have established a crime scene where they searched for evidence.
Detectives investigating the incidents believe suspects responsible for last night's incidents may be the same suspects that committed a robbery in Linden.
