Uniformed Postal Worker Carjacked in Newark's West Ward

Newark

A female mail carrier did not suffer physical injuries after being a victim of an armed carjacking in Newark's West Ward Saturday.

Police believe that the postal employee was completing her delivery of mail in the 80's block of Cedar Avenue when an unidentified man approached armed with a knife and demanded her vehicle.

Newark Police patrolling the area and unaware of the prior carjacking noticed the driver of a Dodge Durango operating recklessly in the area South Orange and Sanford avenues shortly before 5:10 p.m.

When police began to follow the vehicle, the driver sped away, then crashed a short time later in the 8000 block of Sanford Avenue, according to officials.

Police officers engaged in a foot pursuit followed the man through the yards of the neighborhood but finally apprehended him near 809 Sanford Avenue, according to police.

United States Postal Police notified Newark that the suspect was operating the vehicle that was carjacked from a postal employee.

One civilian suffered non-life threatening injuries after the Dodge Durango collided with their car during the pursuit.

The incident remains under investigation.
