Unattended Cooking Blamed for Early Morning Newark South Ward Smoke Condition in Building

Newark

Fire officials in Newark determined the cause of an early morning smoke condition coming from a building in the city's South Ward was due to unattended cooking.

According to officials, firefighters were called to 373 Wainwright Street after residents reported seeing smoke fill the halls of their building at approximately 3:20 a.m.

Fast responding firefighters arrived at the 2.5 story brick four family building and quickly located the seat of the blaze which was isolated to the kitchen of an apartment where a resident left food cooking on a stove that burned according to reports.

A check of the building for extensions or injured victims came back negative according to officials.
