Late Sunday night, a horrific incident occurred on Route 1&9 near the intersection of Maple Avenue in Elizabeth, where two individuals were fatally struck by a truck.
The accident happened just before midnight, prompting an immediate response from emergency responders.
Upon arrival, Elizabeth police and emergency medical services discovered two unidentified victims, believed to be females, trapped beneath the truck.
The severity of the accident led to the immediate notification of the Union County Prosecutor's Office to assist in the investigation.
Spokesperson Ruby Contreras said the two pedestrians were crossing the roadway at Routes 1&9 and Maple Avenue when a tractor-trailer was stopped at the light and proceeded forward when the southbound light turned green.
The pedestrians were fatally struck, but the driver remained at the scene.
No further information has been released at this time as the investigation continues.
