A high-speed police chase in Union County early Tuesday morning came to a crashing end in Newark’s South Ward with two arrests and one suspect fleeing on foot. The pursuit began shortly before 3 a.m. when Union Police attempted to stop a driver in a white BMW, reportedly stolen from Newark and committed multiple traffic violations.
Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, leading officers on a dangerous chase along Route 22.
The pursuit ended near the intersection of East Peddie Street and Elizabeth Avenue when the suspect vehicle crashed. As the car came to a halt, two individuals bailed out and fled on foot.
Officers quickly apprehended one suspect, while the second evaded capture by jumping into a white Chevrolet Malibu near the Burger King on Elizabeth Avenue.
It remains unclear if the Malibu was carjacked during the suspect’s escape.
A third suspect was found inside the crashed vehicle and taken into custody without incident.
No officers were injured during the chase, and police continue to search for the suspect who fled. The incident remains under active investigation.
