Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced that members of the Department’s Sexual Assault and Rape Analysis, (S.A.R.A.) Unit arrested two suspects who were involved in a domestic related incident where police responded to reports of four people stabbed at two locations, earlier this week.
According to authorities, on Wednesday, four individuals, two men and two women, were socializing when the group started to argue.
The group consisted of two brothers, one a teenager, the wife of the older brother and the teenage girlfriend of the younger brother.
Police said the argument escalated, became physical with a bottle and a knife being used during the confrontation.
All four parties were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. With the exception of the younger brother, who required surgery the other victims were treated and released.
The older brother, Michael Wheeler, 29, of Newark was arrested immediately after receiving treatment for his injuries for open warrants in Newark, Jersey City and Toms River.
After an intensive investigation, S.A.R.A. detectives developed sufficient evidence to charge two of combatants with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, Wheeler for possession of a knife and his younger brother’s 17-year-old girlfriend for possession of a bottle.
Director Ambrose commended the detectives from the S.A.R.A. unit for being able to quickly close this job.
Initially there was nothing but chaos with four people suffering from what were initially reported as stab wounds.
Within days of the incident, the detectives were able to determine what occurred and arrest the responsible parties Ambrose said.
