Authorities have arrested two Kearny residents in connection with a February motor vehicle crash that left a moped operator with life-threatening injuries.
The arrests, made on Monday, December 2, 2024, were announced by Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.
According to the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, the incident occurred on the night of February 11.
A 67-year-old man from North Arlington was struck by a cargo van near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Bergen Avenue in Kearny.
The van fled the scene but was later recovered nearby.
The investigation determined that 35-year-old Sergio Morocho was driving the cargo van at the time of the crash.
He faces charges including knowingly leaving the scene of a collision, unlawfully taking the vehicle, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities revealed that two children were unrestrained in the back of the van when the collision occurred.
Sandra Morocho, 33, falsely claimed she was driving the vehicle during the crash. She is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and hindering the investigation.
The arrests took place at separate locations in Lyndhurst and Irvington.
Both individuals have been released pending their first court appearances.
The moped operator, whose injuries were described as life-threatening, was treated at the scene by first responders before being transported to a local hospital.
Further updates on the victim’s condition have not been provided.
