Firefighters extinguished a small blaze that caused heavy smoke inside a highrise building in downtown Newark this evening.
Crews were dispatched to 570 Broad Street -at the intersection of Fulton Street- after learning of a smoke condition around 6:20 p.m.
Fast responding firefighters arrived and struck a second alarm after smoke began to fill several floors while crews searched for the seat of the blaze.
Firefighters reportedly found a box of burning rags on or around the 5th floor and swiftly knocked the fire down.
The building was evacuated and no physical injuries were reported. All firefighters were accounted for and safe
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
