Newark and the North Jersey region are waking up to the welcome sight of rain this morning after weeks of unusually dry conditions that left the area in drought and fueled wildfires that burned thousands of acres of brush. As of 4:40 a.m., Newark had received about half an inch of rain, with some parts of New Jersey reporting totals of up to an inch.
The much-needed rain is expected to continue throughout the day, with more showers and even the possibility of a thunderstorm in the forecast.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will fall to around 44 degrees by 5 p.m. as north winds transition to northwest at 14 mph.
Showers are likely to persist into the evening, tapering off before 10 p.m., with nighttime lows around 35 degrees.
While this rainstorm ends a nearly two-month streak without significant precipitation, it comes with challenges for commuters. Roads are expected to be slick during the morning rush, and drivers are urged to exercise caution.Despite the messy conditions, today’s rainfall is a critical step toward alleviating drought and reducing wildfire risks across the region.
Residents are encouraged to stay safe and appreciate the much-needed downpour.
