Police officials in Newark are investigating the motive behind a stabbing in the city's East Ward Sunday.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the early morning incident had police at the intersection of Chestnut and McHorter streets just before 3:10 a.m.
Police were dispatched to the area after learning of a physical altercation with possible injuries.
Officers arrived and found a severely injured male stabbed about a half dozen times and a second person also suffering stab wounds.
The victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment and a third victim was located by authorities suffering a non-life threatening injury to his arm.
Police are looking into reports that the victims were ambushed after they exited a local bar, then stabbed multiple times.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
