Three people were killed in an early morning crash on Interstate 280, State Police said.
At approximately 10:35 a.m. troopers responded to Interstate 280 eastbound at mile marker 11.7 in East Orange for a multi-vehicle accident.
Investigation revealed that Michael Devito, 65, of North Bergen was driving a 2000 Mak dump truck - registered to Direct Waste Services out of Belleville - eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a Honda passenger vehicle and at least five other vehicles.
The three occupants of the Honda - driver and two passengers - were pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of the deceased are being withheld pending positive identification and notification to the next of kin.
Four others sustained minor injuries.
The truck driver, Devito was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of a minor arm injury.
A female who was in a silver Volvo, was also taken to University Hospital for treatment of minor lacerations along with two children who were passengers in a red Honda were also taken to University Hospital for precautionary reasons.
The crash remains under investigation.
