Firefighters are on the scene of a three-alarm house fire that's burning in the township at this time.

Crews responded to 40 Tichenor Terrace shortly before 4 a.m. after several calls reporting fire inside a dwelling at that location.

Firefighters rushing to the scene arrived to find heavy fire visible on the upper levels of a two family house.

Flames began to extend to both side of the structure as firefighters from Newark and Maplewood assisted in extinguishing the blaze. There was severe damage to houses on both sides of the original fire scene that left about nine people displaced including three children and a family dog.

A firefighter was transported to University Hospital suffering minor injuries.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
