A third Atlantic City man was arrested this morning for the November shooting death of a Pleasantville man, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced.
This morning, Friday, January 15, 2016, members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Atlantic City Police Department, and the United States Marshals Service arrested Andre Smiley, 28, of the 1800 block of Hummock Avenue, Atlantic City, for the November 29, 2015 shooting death in Pleasantville of Equallie M. Bumpass.
Smiley was arrested without incident at approximately 9:30 a.m. at a residence on Sewell Avenue, Atlantic City.
He was transported to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in Mays Landing, and will be lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility after being processed for the arrest, on $1,000,000 full cash bail, set by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury.
Two Atlantic City men, Amir Sanders, 21, and Bryant Marsh, 26, were arrested the past Monday, January 11, 2016. Law enforcement continues its search for one more man charged with the crime: Marshall Coley, 27, of the 100 block of Chesapeake Avenue, Atlantic City.
Pleasantville Police responded on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 1:29 p.m., to the 300 block of East Greenfield Avenue, Pleasantville, in response to a 9-1-1 call.
Upon arrival, police found the body of Equallie M. Bumpass, 36, of North 4th Street, Pleasantville, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds.
Bumpass was transported by paramedics to the Regional Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center—City Division.
Bumpass succumbed to his wounds at the hospital, and was pronounced dead at 2:48 p.m.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded. Next-of-kin were notified.
An autopsy performed the next day by Dr. Gerald Feigin of the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death: homicide.
An intensive 6-week investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Pleasantville Police Department, with the assistance of the Atlantic City Police Department and Atlantic City SWAT led to the issuance of charges on Friday, January 8, 2016, against:
1. Amir Sanders, 21, of the 2000 block of Grant Avenue, Atlantic City,
2. Bryant Marsh, 26, of the 1100 block of Reading Avenue, Atlantic City,
3.MarshallColey,27,ofthe100blockofChesapeakeAvenue,AtlanticCity,and
4. Andre Smiley, 28, of the 1800 block of Hummock Avenue, Atlantic City.
All four men were charged with 9 crimes:
* Felony Murder,
* Murder, and
* Kidnapping—three crimes of the 1st degree;
* Conspiracy to Commit Murder,
* Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping,
* Possession of a Handgun for a Unlawful Purpose, and
* Unlawful Possession of a Handgun—four crimes of the 2nd degree;
* Conspiracy to Possess a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and
* Conspiracy to Unlawfully Possess a Handgun—both 3rd degree crimes.
Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury set each man’s bail at $1,000,000 full cash.
Amir Sanders was arrested on Friday, January 8, 2016 at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where he was being held on unrelated charges, and was returned there after his processing for the arrest on the new charges.
Bryant Marsh was arrested without incident upon his release from the Atlantic City Medical Center—City Division, on Saturday, January 9, 2016, and was processed and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Marshall Coley and Andre Smiley have not yet been arrested.
A conviction for murder carries a potential sentence of incarceration in New Jersey State Prison for a period of 30 years to life. The potential penalty for a conviction on the 1st degree kidnapping charge is 15-30 years of imprisonment. The potential penalty for a 2nd degree conviction is 5-10 years in prison, and the potential prison penalty for a 3rd degree conviction is 3-5 years.
