Police in Newark are looking for a suspect who stole a vehicle left running with children inside in downtown Newark Friday night.
At approximately 11:20 p.m., police were notified of a possible carjacking in the vicinity of 583 Broad Street near Central Avenue.
When officers arrived, they immediately learned that a thief had stolen the vehicle left running at that location.
Officers around the city were placed on alert and began to search sections of Newark for the vehicle.
Police canvassing the area of Commerce and Broad streets reportedly located the car with the 2-year-old and the 5-year-old inside unharmed.
Both children were evaluated by EMS but did not suffer any physical injuries.
The suspect fled the scene and is at large.
Newark Police continues to remind residents to keep kids safe, never leave unattended kids in vehicles running.
Police say besides unattended running vehicles can be easily stolen by a thief, an errand may only take a few minutes. Still, it's also is enough time for a car to overheat, creating dangerous and deadly conditions for children trapped inside.
The suspect in Friday night's car theft remains at large.
