If you're not careful, these entrepreneurial streets will make you think there's only one way to win or grow your business.
We'll see one 'guru' touting the latest method and another expert sharing the biggest secret. But the truth is this; growth requires us to consider a few things. We can't simply take someone's word and compare our results to theirs. That's a toxic way to build a legacy.
The next time you feel tempted to do a side-by-side comparison with someone on your feed, consider this:
- Marital Status. Are they married? If so, do you know how healthy their marriage truly is? Every marriage requires time and energy to thrive. Be sure to look at the entire picture! Also, consider their family status. Do they have young children, older children, or no children? All of this plays into the equation.
- Their current influence. Are they building from scratch with no audience, or do they have a built-in engaged audience that makes their growth strategy seem like an overnight success? But meanwhile, they've been building their list for years. Their audience buys from them. If you consider using their suggested strategy, look beneath the surface first.
- Their capacity and make-up. We are not all built the same. We are not all in the same season of life too. For example, a single person has more time to devote to their business than a married person who also tends to their family. Neither is good or bad, just different. Be sure to count the cost of a growth strategy before buying into it. Do your research, as you may discover that your results may take longer if you don't have the same energy and time budget as the one you're comparing yourself to.
- Their resources make a difference. Does the person you compare your business to have the financial resources or human capital to keep the 'machine' going? Often, people outsource much of their work to focus on other areas. But if you compare your business to someone on your feed, you may be frustrated trying to do 'all the things yourself, not realizing that the one you're comparing to has a team of resources to make it happen.
The point of breaking this down is to encourage you to keep moving forward with the right steps in the right direction. Even if they're not the largest steps, it only matters if you keep taking them.
