SWAT Responds to Bernards Township Armed Person Barricade

Somerset County authorities announced the peaceful resolution involving a barricaded armed person following a police response to a residence in Bernards Township.

Somerset County officials stated that on Monday, January 31, at approximately 9:45 am Bernards Township Police Department responded to a residence located on Goltra Drive, Basking Ridge, to assist Bridgeway PESS with an emotionally disturbed resident.

Responding Bernards Township Police say officers subsequently responded to the residence, which led the adult male resident, whom authorities are not identifying, to barricade himself within a bathroom with a loaded firearm.

Authorities stated that additional Bernards Township Police Officers responded to assist.  

A Bernards Township Police Officer initiated and engaged the barricaded subject in conversation to have him surrender.

According to authorities, at approximately 12:55 p.m., the Somerset  County SWAT team, along with the Crisis Negotiators Team, responded to the residence.

Somerset County Communications Field Comm, Somerset County TEMS (Medics), and municipal medical personnel responded to the scene.

Officials say, subsequently, a Crisis Negotiator began speaking with the barricaded subject.  During negotiations, the barricaded subject exited the bathroom multiple times armed with a handgun.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., a Somerset County SWAT member deployed a TASER at the armed subject when he exited the bathroom, which caused him to drop the weapon, as additional SWAT Officers gained control of the subject without further incident.

There were no injuries to any parties involved, and the subject was turned over to medical personnel for transport to a medical facility for evaluation.
