Police in Newark took several armed robbery suspects into custody overnight after a pursuit that touched through parts of the city on Sunday night.
A preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 11:20 p.m., police were alerted of an armed robbery in progress of a convenience store (in a strip mall) in the 300 block of South Street.
Employees inside the store told police that suspects entered the business armed with a gun and took an unspecified amount of cash before fleeing the scene.
Police immediately began searching for a dark-colored BMW X3 with reported NJ license plate numbers "WCE-35E, occupied by as many as four suspects who they believed committed the robbery.
While officers investigated the Newark Ironbound section robbery, detectives learned of a second robbery on the campus of Rutgers University.
The same armed suspects reportedly walked into an eatery in the 100 block of University Avenue and took cash at gunpoint.
Police on alert and canvassing all precinct wards in Newark caught up with the vehicle and began to chase the car on I-78 and then back onto local streets.
Suspects bailed from the car in the vicinity of 17th and Morris avenues, where officers arrested the assailants after a brief foot pursuit.
Police believe the men are suspected of at least one other business robbery in Newark and multiple armed robberies of non-English speaking suspects in Newark's Ironbound section.
No physical injuries were reported.
