A black Dodge pickup truck stolen out of Newark led police on a high speed chase through the city this morning, according to police.
Officers were called to a Ford auto maintenance depot at the corner of Williams Avenue and Bennett Street shortly before 6 a.m. for s report of a possible automobile break-in and a suspicious pick-up truck.
Upon arrival, officers spotted a black Dodge pick-up truck pushing a Ford truck with a man apparently trying to get the Ford started.
As the officer activated the emergency lights, the man suddenly took off at a high rate of speed heading south on Bennett Street.
The suspect then travelled west on Virginia Avenue and turned north on Route 440, ultimately entering the Route 1&9 Lincoln Highway Bridge where it struck a
red vehicle.
When the Dodge slammed on its brakes the police car rear-ended the Dodge.
At this point, officers shut off their lights and sirens and terminated pursuit for the safety of civilians and officers.
The police car sustained minor damage but no injuries were reported.
The stolen Dodge continued on Central Avenue in Kearny.
