Suspect Apprehended in Late Night Paterson Shooting

Paterson

A brief high-speed pursuit of a vehicle occupied by a suspect wanted for a shooting in Paterson ended in an arrest late Monday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the area of Essex and Straight streets around 9:45 p.m.

Several police units arrived at the scene and found the victim suffering a bullet wound in their hip.

Police say the unidentified victim was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Police say they came upon a Honda Odyssey minivan wanted for the shooting during the investigation, but the driver refused to stop and led officers on a high-speed chase.

Police say during the chase, they believe the suspect tossed the weapon from the car just before officers apprehended him in the area of 20th Avenue and Chestnut Street.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
