In Summit, New Jersey, efforts are underway to address public health and safety concerns stemming from a growing homeless encampment at the Summit Post Office. According to information released by town officials,Mayor Elizabeth Fagan’s Task Force on Homelessness, in partnership with Congressman Tom Kean, has implemented measures to reduce overnight disruptions at the post office while providing support to those in need.
The post office had become a focal point for individuals seeking overnight shelter, leading to unsanitary conditions and safety concerns for postal workers and early-morning residents using the self-service kiosk.
People were often found sleeping in the lobby, creating challenges for staff and visitors.
In response, the task force worked with the U.S. Postal Service to adjust operating hours, creating a safer and more functional environment for everyone.
“The safety and well-being of our community members are a priority, and our Homelessness Task Force is dedicated to connecting individuals to the right resources—whether for shelter or longer-term housing solutions,” said Mayor Elizabeth Fagan.
“By working with Congressman Kean and the U.S. Postal Service, we’ve found a balanced approach that resolves immediate concerns while continuing to support the homeless population with the resources they need.”
While the post office hours changes address immediate issues, Summit officials emphasized their commitment to helping individuals experiencing homelessness.
The task force’s outreach efforts aim to guide people toward shelter, rehabilitation services, and longer-term housing.
These initiatives have successfully helped eight individuals transition to homes, employment, or rehabilitation programs in the past year.
“Our approach addresses both community safety and the needs of individuals facing homelessness,” Mayor Fagan added. “We’ve taken a thoughtful, collaborative approach to ensure those in need have access to services that provide a pathway out of homelessness.”
The Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness remains dedicated to its mission of creating long-term solutions while addressing the challenges faced by both the community and its vulnerable populations.
Outreach by service providers and first responders will continue, with long-term housing as the ultimate goal.
Residents are encouraged to support local initiatives and stay informed about the task force’s ongoing efforts to create a safer, more inclusive community.
