Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Police in Newark took a student into custody for bringing a loaded gun into a charter school in Newark’s West Ward on Tuesday morning.

NdhAt approximately 10:26 a.m., police responded to KIPP Newark Collegiate Academy, located at 129 Littleton Avenue (the site of the old Newark West Ward Boys and Girls Club), after receiving a call about a handgun found in the possession of a student.

Director Frage said school officials turned the handgun over to the responding officers.

A 16-year-old male student was arrested and is facing charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a minor.

The weapon was found after a search of his locker was conducted by school officials.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the student might have been involved in a dispute with individuals who did not attend the school and may have used the school to only store the weapon until the end of the day.

However, police have not confirmed the motive for the boy bringing the gun to school at this time.

The incident is under investigation.
