A physical altercation between two students at Arts High School in Newark's Central Ward on Friday morning resulted in injury to an educator.The incident unfolded just before 9:55 a.m. in a second-floor English classroom.
The confrontation began when two female students started to engage with each other verbally and then physically. The encounter escalated in the pair grabbing, punching, and throwing each other to the floor.
As the instructor attempted to intervene and break up the fight, she was knocked to the ground, sustaining a laceration and a non-life-threatening head injury.
In a swift response, at least two other teachers and several students came to the aid of the bleeding instructor.
Working together to separate the teenage girls, who continued to struggle with each other on the floor for several minutes.The injured teacher reportedly received initial treatment from the school nurse before being taken to an off-site district medical center for further observation.
She received multiple stitches to her wound but is expected to recover.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported from the incident. The matter is currently under investigation, and as of now, no charges have been filed by the police.
The quick response of the school's staff and students in providing aid and attempting to de-escalate the situation highlights the importance of preparedness in handling such emergencies.
