Police are investigating the cause of a fast moving fire that killed a man trapped in the basement of the Edison home.
According to preliminary reports, crews responded to 89 Livingston Avenue for a report of a house fire with trapped occupants shortly after 5 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames making it nearly impossible to enter the home.
Police on the scene spoke to a 53-year-old man who explained that he was able to rescue his blind 60-year-old aunt and 70-year-old uncle from the home but because of the heavy fire could not renter to rescue his 75-year-old father who was reportedly asleep in the home’s basement.
The 75-year-old man was ultimately pronounced dead while the uncle was transported to the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas in Livingston. The woman and and the 53-year-old man were transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Police are searching for the family's dogs who are currently missing.
The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the family with temporary housing.
