My friends and family in Newark and the North Jersey region are waking up to a snowy Martin Luther King Jr. Day as the storm that brought several inches of snow has moved out, leaving behind bitter cold and icy conditions.Treacherous roads and slippery sidewalks constitute a significant concern this morning as freezing temperatures set in.
At 4:15 a.m., Newark recorded 4 to 5 inches of snow accumulation. Other notable snowfall totals across the region include:
- Caldwell: 5.0 inches
- West Orange: 4.5 inches
- Livingston: 4.4 inches
- Nutley: 4.0 inches
With temperatures currently at 21 degrees in Newark and wind chill making it feel as low as 7 degrees, the National Weather Service has advised residents to exercise caution if venturing outdoors.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day forecast includes increasing clouds, a high near 28 degrees, and wind chill values between 5 and 15.
Winds will range from 9 to 13 mph. Tonight, the region will experience clear skies but an even more frigid low of around 9 degrees, with wind chill values between zero and 5.
This day also marks the inauguration of President Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. The ceremony, which will take place at noon, will be broadcast live. However, due to severe cold conditions, it has been moved indoors.
Residents are encouraged to stay indoors, reflect on the impactful leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or watch the historic presidential inauguration from the warmth of home.
