ShotSpotter Device Alerts Newark Police to South Ward Shooting

A ShotSpotter device is being credited with alerting Newark police to a shooting incident that occurred late Friday night in the city’s South Ward.

Authorities said the incident took place around 10:45 p.m. near the intersection of Avon Avenue and Peshine Avenue.

The ShotSpotter system detected multiple rounds of gunfire, prompting officers to respond swiftly to the area.

Upon arrival, police discovered several shell casings at the scene. However, after thoroughly canvassing the neighborhood, no victims were found.

Newark’s Shooting Response Team was also called to assist in the investigation.

Officials confirmed that the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

The investigation is ongoing as police work to determine the circumstances behind the shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Newark authorities.
