Newark police are investigating a shooting incident near a county park late Saturday evening, thanks to a quick alert from the city’s ShotSpotter gun detection system.
According to officials, the device activated just before 10 p.m. after detecting gunfire in the 400 block of North 5th Street, near Branch Brook Park.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area after locating multiple shell casings.

A thorough canvass of the neighborhood, including areas around the park, did not uncover any victims. However, police confirmed that at least one vehicle was struck by gunfire.
Authorities believe the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.
The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation. Three individuals were detained by Newark Police, who will determine if the men initiated the shooting.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward as the investigation remains active.
