After several shots fired just outside the department, police believe to have been the target of a drive-by shooting early this morning.
At approximately 4:05 a.m. an officer that minutes after entering the station heard the gunfire outside, police said.
When he exited the building and began to investigate, he found the front door with five bullet holes. Two other shots were fired, one at a wall of the building and another bullet pierced the chief's office window.
The suspect(s) fired a total of 7-large-caliber bullets - .40 caliber or larger - at the Crown Point Road building.
Surveillance images show a small black sedan driving through the station's parking lot twice before fleeing the scene, according to surveillance.
No injuries were reported and an investigation has been initiated, police said.
Police don't believe the shooter(s) are targeting the general public but instead an officer or police in general.
Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Sgt. Michael Cramer at (856) 853-4599 ext. 164.
Newark and Elizabeth Police Departments are also investigating two incidents that targeted police vehicles early this morning.
