Orange Police are actively investigating a shots fired incident that occurred near Monte Irvin Park on Thursday night.
The incident initially came to the attention of Sheriff's officers, who were dispatched to reports of gunfire around 10:20 p.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered shell casings outside the park near the intersection of Oakwood Place and Central Avenue.
As the investigation progressed, it was handed over to the Orange Police Department, who are now working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
One aspect of their inquiry involves establishing whether a gunshot victim who arrived at University Hospital in Newark overnight was injured at the same Orange crime scene.
At roughly 10:35 p.m., University Hospital alerted Newark Police to the presence of a male victim seeking treatment for a gunshot wound.
The victim initially claimed to have been shot in the Tremont and Chelsea area before arriving at the hospital.
However, there have been no immediate reports of a corresponding crime scene in the West Ward community.
Both investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details.
