The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed an active investigation into a shooting that left a male victim dead late last night in the city.
Details of the shooting are pending from authorities but late last night in the area of Sanford Avenue and Mckay Avenue, police responded to the section of town on reports of shots fired.
First police units arrived to the scene where they located the victim reportedly laying on the ground struck by apparent gunfire.
The victim was rushed to University Hospital in Newark where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
The unidentified victim later died of his injuries according to reports.
Police setup a crime scene in the area where they searched for evidence and a possible suspect.
There were no immediate reports of arrests.
