At least a dozen people were displaced when a 2-alarm fire ripped through two houses in the 30's block of Ellis Ave. early Monday morning.
The fire broke out at 298 Ellis Avenue and quickly spread to a three story newer residential house next door. Heavy smoke and flames was seen blazing from the upper level of the 3-story structures shortly after 6 a.m., witnesses said.
EMS transported at least 5 people to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries according to reports.
The American Red Cross were on the scene for housing assistance to about a dozen of the residents that lived in the destroyed homes.
Firefighters from several municipalities including Newark brought the fire under control shortly before 7 a.m. according to officials.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Irvington Fire Department.
