An early morning fire that ripped through a house in Irvington left several families homeless.
Heavy fire ripped through the roof of a two and a half story house located at 928 Sanford Avenue shortly before 12:45 a.m. sending firefighters to the scene where they observed thick smoke and flames coming from the structure upon their arrival.
Newark and Maplewood firefighters were among several agencies that provided mutual assistance to help crews bring the blaze under control in about an hour.
A search of the house has no trapped or injured occupants inside.
The Amercan Red Cross assisted in providing shelter for over a half dozen residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Irvington Fire Department.
