Newark ESU and a Special Weapons and Tactical team rushed to the scene of a shots-fired incident where suspects reportedly briefly barricaded themselves inside a home in the city's South Ward.
As tension continues to mount in the 20's block of Fabyan Place -near Cypress Place- due to an earlier in the month incident with several males arrested for aggravated assault on officers, at approximately 9:22 p.m. last night, a police unit mounted in the area requested backup after officers heard multiple gunshots in close proximity to their patrol car.
According to authorities, about a dozen police officers arrived in the area and found suspects who they detained after police say a weapon and shell casings were recovered.
Police say there were no injuries or property damage immediately reported.
Officers were able to take control of the situation without further incidents. Police officials believe the suspects were inside the home playing with a handgun when it somehow went off.
The situation is under investigation.
